Privacy Policy

Introduction

This Privacy Policy explains how Bokkebets.co.za (“the Site”, “we”, “us” or “our”) collects, uses, stores and protects your personal information in accordance with the Protection of Personal Information Act (POPIA) and other applicable South African laws.

Bokkebets is an independent information site. We are not a bookmaker, casino or betting operator, and we never take bets or handle deposits.

Information we collect

Details you give us

If you choose to sign up for updates, we ask you for the following, and store what you submit:

• Your full name.
• Your email address.
• Your mobile number, including the country dialling code, stored in international format.
• Your confirmation that you are 18 or older, that you accept our Terms and Conditions, and that you have read this Privacy Policy.
• Whether you chose to receive marketing and promotional email. This is optional and separate from the rest of the form.

You do not have to give us any of this. The Site is fully usable without signing up.

Information your browser sends

Like any website, our hosting and server logs record technical information such as your IP address, browser type, operating system and the pages requested. We use this to keep the Site working and secure.

How we use your information

• To provide and improve the Site’s content and services.
• To respond to enquiries or support requests.
• To send you marketing and promotional email, but only if you specifically opted in to it.
• To keep a record of the consent you gave, including which version of our Terms and this Privacy Policy applied at the time.
• To understand general Site usage and performance.
• To comply with applicable laws and regulations.

We do not use your information to make automated decisions about you, and we do not build advertising profiles.

Marketing email and your consent record

Marketing email is opt-in. If you did not tick that box, we will not send you marketing, even though we hold your details.

When you submit the form we store a dated record of each confirmation you gave, together with the version number of the document it applied to. The version of this policy is shown at the top of this page. We keep those records so that both you and we can establish what was agreed and when.

You can withdraw marketing consent at any time, by using the unsubscribe link in any marketing email we send you or by emailing us at the address below. Withdrawing marketing consent does not delete your other details — ask us to erase them if that is what you want.

Cookies and browser storage

This Site does not set cookies and does not use third-party analytics or advertising trackers.

We do store two small values in your own browser, so the signup prompt does not badger you: one recording that you have already seen or submitted it, and one recording that you dismissed it, for seven days. Neither contains personal information, both stay on your device, and clearing your browser data removes them.

We do count page views in our own database, described under Usage measurement below. That counting needs no cookie and stores nothing in your browser.

Usage measurement

We count page views in our own database so that we can see how many people reach the Site and which pages they find useful. This is first-party measurement: the records stay in our database, described below, and are not shared with an analytics provider or an advertising network.

For each page view we record:

• The page you viewed, its title, and the date and time.
• The site or app you arrived from, if any, and any campaign tags in the link you followed.
• Your browser and operating system as broad categories — for example “Safari” on “iOS” — and whether the request came from an automated crawler.
• Your screen and window size, your device’s time zone, your preferred language, and your light or dark mode preference.
• How long the page took to load.

We do not store your IP address in these records, and we do not give your browser an identifier of any kind. That means one view cannot be linked to another, and none of them can be linked to you, to your signup details, or to anything you do later. The records tell us how many views a page received; they cannot tell us how many separate people that was, and we accept that trade in exchange for not tracking you.

Your device’s time zone stands in for a location lookup, so we can tell South African visitors from overseas ones without recording where you are.

Where your information is stored

Details you submit, and the page-view records described above, are stored in a PostgreSQL database hosted on Google Cloud Platform in the africa-south1 (Johannesburg) region. Your information is therefore held in South Africa and is not routinely transferred outside the country.

If that ever changes, we will update this policy and its version before the change takes effect.

Sharing of information

We do not sell, rent or trade your personal information to third parties.

We may share information:

• With service providers who operate our infrastructure on our behalf, strictly for that purpose. Our website hosting and database hosting are provided by Google Cloud Platform and Firebase Hosting.
• When required by law, regulation or court order.

Third-party links

The Site contains links to third-party betting operators and affiliate partners. When you follow one, you leave our Site and that operator’s own privacy policy applies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices, content or policies of external sites, and we encourage you to read theirs.

Data security

We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information from loss, misuse, unauthorised access and disclosure. All traffic to the Site and to our API is encrypted in transit, database access is restricted to the services that need it, and credentials are held in a managed secret store rather than in our code.

No system is perfectly secure. If a breach ever affects your personal information, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.

Your rights under POPIA

You have the right to:

• Request access to the personal information we hold about you.
• Request that we correct it.
• Request that we delete it, subject to any legal requirement that we keep it.
• Object to our processing of it.
• Withdraw your consent, including for marketing email.
• Complain to the Information Regulator of South Africa if you believe we have not handled your information lawfully.

Retention of information

We keep personal information only for as long as is necessary for the purposes described in this policy, or for as long as the law requires. If you ask us to erase your details, we will do so unless we are required to retain a record of your consent, in which case we will keep only that record and tell you so.

Updates to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. Each version carries a version number, shown at the top of this page, and that number is stored with any consent recorded while it applied. Material changes will be published here with a new version before they take effect.
